"Take a walk down history's corridor with me." Elisa Morelli-Hobbs Our goal is to put the "Our New Mexico" program into every fourth grade classroom and every school in New Mexico. If you are interested in putting on a production or want more information, Call (505) 280-8094. My name is Elisa Morelli-Hobbs; I have taught music classes for over 20 years and have been fortunate enough to teach more than ten of those years in New Mexico.
I believe one of the greatest challenges today in education is the transference of
information from one generation to another. Our youth here in New Mexico
and in other parts of the United States in some ways seem to have lost their understanding of what it means to be American,
and for those here, what
it means to be New Mexican. I have
written this brief historical review that I believe will touch the hearts and
minds of our youth. This brief history is approximately 30 minutes long and tells of the New Mexico Territory and the formation of the state of New Mexico. It is an educational journey that takes you through the culture and history of New Mexico. The program tells about the vast history that New Mexico has given us and also gives facts that bring relevance to what is being seen and heard. The land and culture is unique, and the history is far reaching.

The Closing Segment to the Production
Though created for presentation by upper elementary grades, this melodrama lends itself to being performed by younger and older groups as well. The Director's Copy is a great resource to start discussions, give students writing assignments about people and people groups in NM history, as well as giving teachers a new starting point to explore New Mexico history in the classroom. We performed a production of Our New Mexico at the KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque, NM in 2006. A DVD is available for purchase now. E-mail us or call for details. We look forward to hearing from you.

HERE'S WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAM: "...I was most impressed that they [the students] had memorized their lines so well, without a hitch. The flow of the production went so well that it was completed in the time frame you had designated. I do believe the production kept the attention of the assembled students and parents alike. I agree with your objective to use this art form to inform, inspire, and motivate students and parents about the important history in New Mexico. From the interest and enthusiasm of participants, student audience and parents, it was apparent you accomplished your goal. You will be pleased to know that my guest, General Mel Montano indicated his grandson guest, age 2 1/2, generally is very active, restless and limited attention, sat through the whole production glued to the presentation. Now, that is an accomplishment! Former U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Ed Romero, stated how impressed he was with the attention to fine historical facts about New Mexico. He liked the presentation very much." Written by Dr. Henry J. Casso, President, Project Uplift, NM
"My fourth grade class has performed "Our New Mexico" for the past two years. This original play has been beneficial in teaching New Mexico History to the students in a fun and interesting way that meets all learning styles. As a reinforcement and extension of the curriculum it has been outstanding. As opposed to the standard text, the play is more practical and more correct than most books written about New Mexico. I recommend this play for fourth grade students, as well as other grades, that study New Mexico history." Brenda Priddy, 4th Grade Teacher, NM
"Allow me to congratulate you for a production that passed excellence; in a word, it was outstanding. It deserves to be presented in every elementary school throughout the state, and perhaps even at the mid-school level. Everyone who attended will doubtless agree that you review, so painstakingly researched, beautifully written and presented, should be given the widest dissemination." O. G. Baker, Queen of Heaven Parishioner, NM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEXT PROGRAM SHOWS: Vista Grande Elementary School, Rio Rancho, Fourth Grade Classes of Ms. Reed and Ms. Pink, to be performed in the gym Friday, May 20, 2011, 1:00 p.m. Tentative production in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Grade 4 TBA |
